Investment Team

Joe Harriman, CFA

Joe Harriman built the firm’s operational infrastructure and led the launch of nine funds, raising over $200 million in capital. His work included onboarding third-party administrators, implementing institutional-grade systems, and developing policies and procedures.

Hall Barrett’s real estate funds focus on multifamily acquisitions and have purchased over $1 billion in assets.

Joe sits on the Investment Committee for all funds and has overseen investments across hedge funds of funds, private equity secondaries, and life settlements.

He holds a B.S. in Finance from Arizona State University, an M.S. in Financial Markets from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and earned his CFA Charter in 2004. He is an active member of the CFA Society of Chicago.

Mark Purtell

Mark Purtell has grown the operator network from just a few firms to over 400. This extensive network enabled him to manage 29 acquisitions and 15 dispositions, resulting in transactions exceeding $1 billion during his tenure at Hall Barrett.

Drawing on his trading experience at Hall Barrett, Mark created a proprietary, all-encompassing quantitative property model that utilizes various inputs to evaluate potential outcomes through scenario simulations.

He is responsible for asset management of properties and plays a crucial role in all facets of fund construction, including drafting fund and property documents,
engaging with both new and existing investors, composing the quarterly investor letter, and overseeing fund-level audits. Mark earned a B.S. in Finance from the
University of Illinois in 2001 and holds Series 4, 7, 24, and 57 licenses.

Abbas Hashmi

Abbas Hashmi joined Hall Barrett in 2025 to support distribution strategy, fund launches and investor engagement. With over 18 years of experience in private markets, Abbas has worked closely with family offices, RIAs, and high-net-worth families across the US, Middle East, and South Asia.

Prior to Hall Barrett, Abbas held leadership roles at Goldman Sachs and AIG, where he led strategic partnerships, wealth management platform growth, and product launches across alternative investments.

Abbas is also a Program Leader at Columbia Business School’s Global Family Enterprise Program He holds an MBA in International Business and holds Series 63, 82 and SIE licenses.

Preston Hartsell

Preston Hartsell joined Hall Barrett in 2023 and focuses on the underwriting and due diligence of fund investments. He provides analytical support throughout the life span of all investments, from the sourcing of investments through the tracking of portfolio performance and eventual asset disposition.

Prior to Hall Barrett, Preston interned for Essex Property Trust, focusing on portfolio data analytics, and most recently worked at Northmarq, underwriting multi-family properties throughout California. Born and raised in Newport Beach, CA., Preston received a scholarship to play Division 1 baseball at the University of Southern California, where he earned a B.S. in Real Estate Development from the Price School of Public Policy. Preston is currently pursuing his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with a graduation target date of 2027.
